I was sad to learn about the recent passing of Carl Doumani (“Longtime Napa winemaker Carl Doumani dies,” May 8). Carl was an ardent supporter of workforce housing and of Our Town St. Helena, our local nonprofit affordable housing organization.
A few years ago, he made a significant donation to the Pope Street Workforce Housing Project, a 10-unit affordable rental complex at 951 and 963 Pope St., currently under construction. When Carl attended the grand opening of the Brenkle Court project — an eight-unit townhome development where local families participated in building their own homes — he seemed delighted to meet the new homeowners whose lives were changed for the better.
